2008 TOTY Awards
January 22nd 2009, 03:22 CET by m0nty

CheesyPoof is the one who's late this time, so I have reassumed my chairmanship of the PlanetCrap Troll Of The Year awards. You were all nominated, as usual, but only a select few won the prestigious trophies.*

CheesyPoof noted down his ideas in a poorly structured Google Doc filled with unintelligible gibberish, so I'll let him add his thoughts in the comments lest you all develop the same sort of migraine I suffered through trying to decipher it. Of course, what the fans want are the traditional categories, so without further ado...

FOREIGN DIVISION
Best Troll By A Publisher (Total PC Gaming for asking Dumdeedum to do a regular comic)

PLANETCRAP DIVISION
PlanetCrap's Worst Attempt At A Troll (gaggle for this post)
PlanetCrap's Least Comprehensible Troll (bishop for reasons which need no further exposition, unlike his posts)
PlanetCrap's Most Pretentious Troll (m0nty for pretending he will make money from his dumb site LULZ amirite)
PlanetCrap's Best Drama Queen Troll (UncleJeet for blogging his marriage breakdown, divorce and new engagement just to get Crappers talking about him again)
PlanetCrap's Best Multiclass Troll [e.g. Dev/Troll, Journo/Troll] (PenguinX for his blossoming artistic career, making him our resident Artiste/Troll)
PlanetCrap's Most Rabid Fanboi (BobJustBob for his undying love for Spore in the face of massive letdown of expectations)
PlanetCrap's Best User of Cliches To Deflect Trolls (jjohnsen for being a sport with that whole Mormon thing)
PlanetCrap's Best Cliche-spawning Troll (yotsuya... hopefully the next cliche will be something related to an AZ Super Bowl win)
PlanetCrap's Most Predictable Troll (Funkdrunk for his only appearances being threats against people who mention or talk to a particular Crapper)
PlanetCrap's Most Imaginative Troll (Jibble for this post)
PlanetCrap's Best Use Of Technical Jargon In A Troll (bago... nuff said)
PlanetCrap's Best Political Correctness Troll (Hugin  - honorable mention as always for Caryn, e.g. her sterling work on Nazis in the Gaijin thread, but Hugin was there fighting the good fight too)
Best Troll In A PlanetCrap Topic (Chunkstyle for So is Planetcrap dead then?)
PlanetCrap's Most Witty Troll (Shadarr - more of a career TOTY than anything spectacular he did in 2008)
PlanetCrap's Most Convincing Conversion From Troll To Human (The_Joker for having a kid and then realising that he had to grow the fuck up)
PlanetCrap's Best New Troll (TreeFrog in the absence of any actually worthy candidates... proof that he is a troll)
PlanetCrap's Trolling Lifetime Achievement Award (Warren Marshall just to piss him off)
PlanetCrap's Best Single Troll Post (Caryn for this with honorable mention to Gunp01nt for this)
PlanetCrap's Best Troll (FoRmaT... anyone who disagrees with this has obviously not spent enough time on the site, he is currently our pre-eminent troll by a long way)

* note: no actual trophies are to be handed out.

I want to be excited for Crackdown 2, but they showed a FUCKING STORY TRAILER. Talk about the most epic missing of the point imaginable. Even if that is just a mood-setting intro movie and the rest of the game is as structureless and free as it absolutely must be to be Crackdown, it's a different developer. This rumor actually broke a couple of months ago and Realtime Worlds (the original dev) didn't know anything about it. And they were pissed. I guess Microsoft owns the IP and can do whatever they want with it, but I have about as much faith in this as I would have had in the Disney-made Toy Story 3 if Pixar hadn't gone back.

P.S. Crackdown is the single greatest game released in the last fifteen years

One guy I know was talking trash about OpenGL and singing songs about XNA and his game he was making with it.

A few weeks later, he is cursing like a sailor, sending MicroSoft to hell for taking his project and giving it to someone else. He started praising OpenGL and wrote a few tutorials about it.

So this is probably something that will be sold separately, my guess is for $150-$200, be compatible with the current Xbox, but is really meant for the next one.

I'm thinking more $40-75 range as a standalone product, and it'll always be an accessory rather then a primary control system. I'd also expect a dedicated Natal section on XBLA

They appear to want it simply to win back some of the customers migrating to the Wii which isn't going to happen if they're selling it for just $100-50 less then a full Wii, further they can't go too high or it will be seen as an over priced Eyetoy/PS Eye.

As for staying an accessory being camera based rather then controller sensors kind of puts a dampener on it being a major feature for the next xbox. I can't imagine them not including any button based control and letting it all fall to gesture based stuff. Meaning it'll still need some kind of controller but why include the camera and controller when they could just do what Nintendo and Sony did and put sensors on the control?

I think you underestimate how much MS likes to mark up their accessories. The wireless adapter (free on the PS3 and Wii) is $99, the HD's are easily 2x or more the PC equivalent, and the bog standard controllers are $50. This thing supposedly has a camera (or two?), a microphone, depth sensor, and it's own custom processor inside. Honestly the lowest I can see it is $99.

Yeah I'm not sure what they're going to do. It doesn't seem like they have enough time to really give it what it needs to be successful before going fully motion controlled, yet a hybrid xbox 720 system is kind of missing the point. It'll be regulated to sixaxis obscurity then. It really is trying to have your cake and eat it too.

The expensive part of Natal is the software. The cameras and mics are cheap.

MSR has been doing quite a bit of work of inferring 3d positions from camera data. Voice recognition work has been going on all over any place that you don't talk face to face. This has a long research tail.

The thing is MS doesn't have to convince you those accessories are necessary, people do it on their own letting MS get away with charging whatever. With Natal though people are going to need MS to provide a reason to get one or make it cheap enough to buy on potential alone.

So far what they're showing looks like PS Eye+ and as long as that's true they aren't going to be able to mark it up much more then the Eye (it won't at all be easy to get people to drop $100+ on a dancing avatar and some live arcade minigames). Now if they'd announced with something like this ready things would be different.

#1111 by eggbert
Yeah I'm not sure what they're going to do.

The more I think about it the more it appears to be more about media centers and business use then a possible next xbox. The mandatory dashboard updates make for a great way to refine a gesture based UI while putting it out as an accessory means they don't have to wait for the next product/upgrade cycle before getting it to market.

Greeting friends that read PC (still!) in the proper method (archive view, unread only). It is my belief that 2008 was the last great year of the 'Crap. Alas, here we are 6 years later a pale shadow of its former self.

The 'Crap has been in decline forever, sure, but that's not the question. It's what was the last great year before it fell off a cliff. 2008 had a decent number of topics with a decent enough amount of activity. Later years had few topics, but a decent amount of activity before it all went to hell.
