What happened to the ex-Valve crew and their AR glasses? Because it looks to me like they just got their lunch eaten.

They were projecting onto a retro-reflective screen, right? At least that's what I associate w. Valve's efforts.. Haven't heard anything about that technique since, though it sounded really interesting. It was a lot of the advantages of VR, but without the crippling social isolation of VR helmets because the headset wasn't a hermetically closed face-coffin.

I think this proper AR stuff has way more long-term mainstream potential than any of the VR and "Valve" stuff though, even if I found the holographic marketing angle pretty grating in this case (I mean, it's nothing to do with holograms right?). I also don't know about their actual demo, why do I want to be waving my arms around in my living room to awkwardly interact with lowres vaguely transparent graphics again? But, y'know, those are also famous last words from a dinosaur about to be overtaken, so I'm trying to keep an open mind..

The concept of AR is certainly fascinating, and it's only good there's a player in this market. Maybe it's not as sexy as Minecraft through a wall, but I'll be super interested when they start marketing various HUD-like features. I could wear one for biking or skiing or whatever and benefit from a ton of interesting information (speed, friend positions, potential paths, etc. etc. etc.). I guess a bit like Google glass but "full screen". That stuff is IMO much more fundamentally interesting than whatever games and buttons they can put on walls.

Biking/skiing with AR on just sounds like a recipe for a nasty crash.

Admittedly, that is fundamentally more interesting than Minecraft.

I had a dream last night where I was directing little army men with tanks and planes and whatnot like being inside a kind of Toy Story RTS, then I woke up and thought that could actually be done with augmented reality stuff.  Could be fun battling for control of your house multiplayer style, and for parents, no more toys to pick up or stand on in the middle of the night!

Let's face it though, the first thing that's gonna happen is nude patches for girls.

Read the RPS interview with Peter Molyneux. It's fucking spectacular. I don't know how to get all the blood spatters off the inside of my monitor.

Spectacular in what way? Is the fury around his kickstarter campaign really that intense to warrant language like that? All of Perer's games have been late, what's different this time? I came out of the interview thinking Peter makes nothing but sense, but I also have no problem with Kickstarter projects taking years. It's barely a funding site (more like a gift-giving site), certainly not a product site. Set expectations low when spending there.

Now, accountability is good and I don't mean that Peter should be let to run amok in a vacuum, but why the intensity of the language? He has like *25 years* of industry-changing amazing games under his belt and you open with asking if he's a liar? Why accuse him of freewheeling it at a fancy hotel, is it great to force him to defend himself? Why not assume he's dilligent with his time? There are ways of keeping him responsible and honest without going for the throat.

The interviewer, to me, came across as a young hotshot who wants to prove himself, but not realizing that there isn't very much meat on these bones.

Time Splice is an enjoyable, simple little scifi movie. I found the beginning a bit up hill but it quickly progresses into its core plot, and everything that follows is enjoyable. It's a low-budget movie, but the kind where budget and ambitions match up so the technical quality is high and the acting good.

It's not the extremely dense mindwhack of Primer, but it does a good job of exploring how this set of characters react to their unique situation. It's a bit comparable to Time Crimes, minus its action sequences.

It was solar eclipse today. I bought special glasses. It was 100% cloudy, I couldn't even find where the sun would be it was that uniformly gray. I'll just have to catch the next one.. IN MAY 2142!

We only had partial around here, and I've skipped even that. The '99 total eclipse was too fucking cool (waves of B&Es - sweet, sweet overtime pay!), but this didn't even register.

But after all the hullabaloo was over, I did venture outside - and being able to sit in a park in just a shirt is definitely a welcome change.

Huh yeah 1999, that just came up when I talked to my dad about it. Apparently him, my brother, and I went on a car-drive somewhere scenic and witnessed it in all its glory. And it was amazing. And I don't remember it at all! :/ Goddamn my shitty memory!

Good heavens, no! I was about 17 at the time, and I started working for the man... what, maybe two years before? I was just a translator for them. It usually payed fuck all - think about a hundred euros a month or so. But with this stint, I saved up enough for a GeForce - SDR, clearly, but it was such a step forward after the Savage4...

Cripes, gaggle, how can you forget that? Are you going to forget hotdogs in a few years?

When I was in 2nd or 3rd grade there was an eclipse in our area. Except that it rained and we didn't go outside to see it. However, it got dark, as dark as night, and we enjoyed the novelty, though now I know I missed something special due to the weather.

I got fairly lucky with the eclipse and the cloud thinned just enough for it to be briefly viewable without glasses (which I didn't have).  Then I went back to bed.

What is new with anaqer is that my ugly mug just made it into a Siemens-wide newsletter - it's just a group photo (yours truly on the far right), but I feel doubly proud. a) this is my first proper-adultish-corporatey job and they haven't kicked me out in almost a year, and b) I actually contributed by lending my e-m10 for this instead of settling for someones stitched together phone camera job. (Picture's still a bit shit viewed at 100%, but this being taken in our lunch break, I didn't want to bother with overengineering it.)

Me, hunky...? :D Hah, you should see the short chap in the middle in real life - buff as fuck, and he even knows the most about the system of all of us.

The system in question being an ETCS-compliant railway system for France and... I don't remember, Denmark as well? Something like that. It's an exceedingly weird job - there are all sorts of standards like EN 50128 in place, and yet, my first (training) project was implementing a new feature into the safe braking model of a train. Can you say steep learning curve? :)

But it's all cool - we have our own test track with real trains on it, so it's not just simulations, guesswork, and then hammering out a new release.

You urked the 2nd url too. But huh, interesting domain. The metro in Copenhagen is completely unattended but it doesn't sound like that's your customer, the brochure's description relates to our standard city-trains. But that's much more adult software than I've ever ever tried, it sounds challenging. I imagine a bug here is a bit more serious than when I forget to guard an input properly. Is it lots of automatic tests, or mostly classic manual QA?

I came across this article on how nasa develops software, arguably the most mission-critical cannot-ever-fail software out there, and it's an interesting culture they've brought to the tablejetski. Not an extreme to emulate, but enlightening to see where the chase for perfect software ends.

Copenhagen, that's the one - that was release 2.1, mostly just bugfixing stuff left over from there. 3.0.3 is where the party is now. Not to sound like a corporate shill (PC would be a weird place to do that :) but there's some exciting stuff in there.

Riding without hands always seems to be easier on some bikes than others, and it takes a while to adapt to a new bike as well.  The next step is no hands and standing up on the pedals - ideally while striking a Jesus-in-Rio pose.

And yes, Cheesy, no helmet!

What a weekend! Not sure it was a good one, but certainly a relaxed one. Wife is outta town and uh, she left Netflix logged in on my computer, and so.. I ended up watching.. a bit of entertainment.

* Daredevil - didn't like it at first, but it's very good. Wasn't fond of the ending though. This was like, what, 10 hours of TV I consumed almost in one sitting? Jesus.
* Limitless - quite good! Bit of a weird message though.
* Aeon Flux - It's okay, but why did I rewatch it?
* Jumper - Still a great concept in a shitty movie. And oh boy is it shitty. Why did I watch this again?
* Forward Onto Dawn - Eh, a decent attempt at entertainment I guess
* Iron Man - Still the best of the movies. But I have to stop watching...
* Terminator Salvation - Seriously, I need to stop watching movies.
* And parts of Mars Attacks! - It hasn't hold up. Though Tom Jones is funny. And STOP RECOMMENDING ME MOVIES NETFLIX!

So in conclusion, Netflix is really dangerous. I can't recommend it.
