Um, okay.... apparently a pro-war country music video that links the 9-11 terrorist attacks with the current war in Iraq.

"Have you forgotten what it's like to be shot at?" Yes, so we should ask the 18-year old US Marine sixty miles south of Baghdad or the 32-year Iraqi mother of two in Iraq in Basra right now what it's like to be shot at...

Then vote "Yes" for Joker's latest submission bin (which I voted "No" BTW).

Why don't we just not listen to any country/western music at all? That shouldn't be too difficult.

Yes, well, I wouldn't start equating the US with Nazi Germany. No one has rounded up and shot the demonstrators who are against the government's position yet. When that happens, then we'll start talking.

In any case, equating people with Nazis is so overdone that it has lost all meaning and its repeated use has even made (in the minds of the general public) the Nazis seem more cartoonish than the pure evil they once represented.

We're also not rounding up Middle Eastern Americans and putting them in concentration camps.

But yet the US and Canada rounded up Americans/Canadians of Japanese descent because they didn't blend in like Americans/Canadians of German or Italian descent during WW2...

Weren't there reports of people of Arab descent being rounded up and held indefinitely without being charged immediately after the 9-11 terrorist attacks?

Well, when I read the info on US terror alerts, it seems rounding people up and shooting them isn't involved in any color or stage. Has Canada instituted an alert system we don't know about?

Yes. My God. 9,000,000 people. It was horrible. Didn't the website you read that on have a photo?

Eric, it was mainly people with expired visas or other problems.

Yotsuya,

I think you're juxtaposing two separate incidents.  Right after 9-11, a bunch of Arab people were detained without any charges.  More recently, a bunch of Arab people were told to report and register themselves or some such, and those with expired visas were detained or deported.  It's especially lame because it was entirely the fault of the Immigration bureaucracy that they didn't have valid visas.

And BTW, Canada had our share of being a police state thanks to the threat of terrorism.

In October 1970, the British trade commissioner, James Cross, and the Quebec minister of immigration and labour, Pierre Laporte, were kidnapped by the FLQ,  the Front de liberation du Quebec, a terrorist separtist group. From 1963 to 1970, the FLQ planted about 85 bombs and claimed six lives. The kidnappers demanded their jailed brethren be released and their Manifesto be published in newspapers.

In response, the late Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau invoked the War Measures Act, which gave the government the power to suspend civil liberties and the police the power to round up people suspected of being linked to the FLQ without a search warrant and hold people indefinitely without being charged. 465 were rounded up. Quebec City, Ottawa and other parts of Canada was under martial law.

A famous scene involved the CBC reporter Tim Ralfe confronting the PM who responded to questions about the public's reacts to the WMA.

Trudeau: "There's a lot of bleeding hearts around who just don't like to see people with helmets and guns. All I can say is go on and bleed."

Tim Ralfe: "How far are you going to go?"

   Trudeau: "Just watch me!"

On October 17th, the body of Pierre Laporte was found stuffed in the trunk of a green Chevrolet. The Quebec minister was choked to death. In December 1970, James Cross was released after his captors were granted a safe passage to Cuba.

This is now know in Canadian history as "The October Crisis."

You're the big brother (no pun intended) to the south. We Canadians can't ignore your influence up here (although we try).

Actually I don't know that much about your politics, at least the inner workings as it's very different from the Canadian parliamentary style of government. I still don't know what a "GOP" is...
