OMG. PlanetCrap 7.0?
June 27th 2004, 12:37 CEST by Morn

Let's just imagine we were all living in some kind of fantasy world where I am actually working on a new version of this site. What would be your top feature/change requests?

Maybe it would be a good idea to have an option to ignore certain users and all non-registered users, or just put their post in a div with display: none and only display a link that sets the div to display: block in case you want to read the post after all. This feature would certainly get approval from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Scroll Wheels.
Maybe the Front page could have an option to display all the topics with unread posts, or another way to read the topic Intro of topics that are off the front page. Or let the user decide how many topics they want on the frontpage.

The only thing I would add is tracking of statistics, like posts per user, words per post, for each user, etc., that you could view on a statistics page. Also a viewable referrers log maybe. And searching might be nice, but I would settle for post of the day nonsense. Maybe better tag support, like automatic link making or broken tag detection? Anyway, whatever you put in, don't add any support for the stupid IRC quote bot.

I also agree with the IRC conversation from earlier. $10 PayPal'd to Morn gets any topic posted immediately.

I'd like the opportunity to Paypal to Morn at all, I stopped a long time ago because someone said it wasn't working for him or something.  Is this no longer true?

I don't mind ignoring non-registered users, but if you make it too easy to ignore people we'll be having conversations with ourselves pretty soon.

Narcissistic/Solipsistic Post
My last post was 9/19/2001. I had actually stopped posting on 6/30/01, but I came back to read through the September 11th topic as it unfolded and apparently got sucked in enough to make one last post. I used some sort of lame superfluous nickname based non-sig sig ('sup shaithis) and I would still argue about politics and the law all the time (I wasn't in law school then). Hell I posted essays from economics textbooks for God's sake. I was always meticulous about formatting my posts though (bolding titles of movies, games, companies in proper Wall Street Journal style, making sure to always quote people properly etc.) but I wasn't as much of a link-fiend back then. Oh well, at least the really embarassing stuff from pre-1999 is gone forever.

I started posting here again on 05/15/03 after having seen the Matrix Reloaded and feeling an intense need to explain how terrible it was. I'm not sure it was such a good idea.

Admittedly I'm not usually spamming the site with comments, but I like it quite a bit how it is.  I'd like a 'mark thread as read' button, I guess.  I guess I'd second DKI's request for a favicon, even.

Nothing particularly big comes to mind though.

To be honest there's not all that much I'd change about the site, it's almost all good.

The few things I would tweak:

Sub-threading (a la the bug reporting thread) I'd probably do away with as never seemed to be used much and looks like one of those things that complicates code.

One or two parsing bugs, like the \"quotes in url text\" one (htmlspecialchars() should fix that) and the one where two spaces are replaced with "  " rather than "  " which occasionally causes odd line wrapping.  Oh, and a search and replace on the database to convert pre-PC6 posts to using craptags rather than html.

As G-Man mentioned, a rolling top-referrers thing might be nice, if only so we can invade other forums that link here from time to time and sow discord.

And of course, a search feature would be great, mainly just for the pleasure of seeing all Jibble's work on Crapsifter made null and void.

Oh and finally, limit Trunks to about 20 characters for his sig.

Make the submission bin totally transparent, showing the exact numbers needed to vote a topic in or out and giving a live tally of the votes thus far. Tighten up the process so topics don't linger in the bin for days before getting voted in or out.

Allow for easier formatting, such as being able to highlight text and click a button to apply bold or italics to it. Add a proper quoting feature that automatically attributes the quote to the author. This is one of the few forums that requires a separate app (OpenCrap) to do such things. I'm lazy and don't like that.

An easily accessed "show unread posts" link.

A way to change the color scheme. PC's is not bad but I prefer lighter text on darker backgrounds. It's easier on my eyes.

Automatic tagging for valid URL's.

Allow people to set the timestamp to their own timezone, not the current Goblin Standard Time.

That's all I've got for now.

I wanted that too, but didn't want to go there...

Crazy Revolutionary Ideas
How about reinventing this site as some sort of real-life popularity/democracy metagame by letting people nominate and vote for each others' position in a hierarchy. The highest level becomes admins with topic pushing powers, a lower level can write the topics, and each level below can moderate and comment on (but never delete) the posts of anyone below them in rank. Program it for global resets every few months (or maybe even a voteable reset) and see what emerges.

Or how about this: Set up random logic bomb type events which will do wacky things to peoples' posts. Like mess with the colors or parse the post text through a pig latin translator, randomly changing someone's displayed username, etc. Maybe have some colorful fake personalities intercede in discussions randomly with non-sequitors and hi-jinks.

I suggest using the GameSpy model -- 50 moderators for every 10 users. People learn to say the right things over and over to attain moderator status. Moderators are equipped with two big buttons, a red one that prints the sentence "The Search Button is your friend" and a blue one that prints "This has been moved to the Off Topic Forum."

I'd like...

- The ability to change my email address.
- Easier way for doing links/error correction (or more ways to stop mistakes, e.g. no http://http:// or /urk])
- A way to mark everything on the site as read without having to read it all.
- Usernames being unique (I think two people can run with the same name right now).
- More love here.

NO MODERATORS. NO POST RANKING. NO SLASHDOT-LIKE CRAP WHATSOEVER.

The moment you introduce any sort of moderator crap or "rank people's posts" crap, you'll send this place into a hell from which it will never return.

The only thing I'd like is something Ned mentioned: a properly quoted post in the web interface when I want to quote someone. (I use the web interface on my laptop, but OpenCrap on my desktop.)

Really..I'm pretty okay with the site.  As I've discussed with Jibble, i'd like there to be some kind of sidebar, I dunno, wikiesque..or just a mini..something or other, where one could post urls on a floating three or four day basis so that you didn't have to hunt for URLs in threads all the time.  But aside from that...yeah, I suppose some formatting shortcuts would be nice.

Also, a "most recently linked" area on the front page which keeps tabs on the most recent links, so that if you want to find something that was linked you don't have to go back through everything to find it.
