OMG. PlanetCrap 7.0?
June 27th 2004, 12:37 CEST by Morn

Let's just imagine we were all living in some kind of fantasy world where I am actually working on a new version of this site. What would be your top feature/change requests?

NO MODERATORS. NO POST RANKING. NO SLASHDOT-LIKE CRAP WHATSOEVER.

The moment you introduce any sort of moderator crap or "rank people's posts" crap, you'll send this place into a hell from which it will never return.

The only thing I'd like is something Ned mentioned: a properly quoted post in the web interface when I want to quote someone. (I use the web interface on my laptop, but OpenCrap on my desktop.)

Really..I'm pretty okay with the site.  As I've discussed with Jibble, i'd like there to be some kind of sidebar, I dunno, wikiesque..or just a mini..something or other, where one could post urls on a floating three or four day basis so that you didn't have to hunt for URLs in threads all the time.  But aside from that...yeah, I suppose some formatting shortcuts would be nice.

Stick to the law books and leave teh funnay to guys like DKI.

Maybe some sort of code that would prevent FAVICON-type flooding might be nice, but  other than that, it's sallrite.

Also, a "most recently linked" area on the front page which keeps tabs on the most recent links, so that if you want to find something that was linked you don't have to go back through everything to find it.

My suggestions:
1: Add a "reply with quoted text" link to each entry, below the date stamp, so people who use the website can easily reply to a message with quoted text.

2: Mess with the code as much as possible so that opencrap won't work and will need a total re-write.  Those opencrappers in their ivory towers with thier easy quote functions need to be taken down to the level of us website using peons.  Go ahead and quote that biatches!

Automatic truncating of extremely long posts would be a good thing. Flood protection wouldn't really be necessary if this was done.

I think there should be the ability to post pics. I know most people would expect trolls to post images of tubgirl, goatse or something similar to be cool 'n edgy. That's why I'd also suggest that these two options be included:

show images
show images as links only

I'm not going to try and revolutionize anything with a possible v7.0, but I would like to update the site with some bits currently missing, and I don't want to touch that ugly old code again. So don't worry, if 7.0 actually happens, the biggest changes will probably be frontend stuff like a new CSS-based layout (with switchable style sheets as different "skins"), a better voting mechanism, a proper search engine, more and better syndication feeds and the likes.

Yeah the only thing I thought of was a graphical reorganization and the style sheets sounds like a perfect solution. I think when I first started reading this place had a maroon/purply thing going on. Are there any screenshots of old versions?

I like PC pretty much as it is.  I'd echo a few small things as others have:

- Easy quoting, with multiple quotes ability (similar to OC)
- Automatigical, or easier, formatting, maybe auto links.
- NO PICTURES!
- Smaller text would be nice.  Just something that would be easier to have a footnote.  No Bigger.
- No ignore, no post voting, nothing like that.  It would easily ruin that which is the beautiful PC.
- And Hugin's comments on the floating bar of doom, that sounds nice.

Lack of moderation, lack of images, few topics, and huge topic lengths are what make the crap the crap.  Change any of that and the place will quickly either die or turn in to every other forum.

Also, we need support for the blink tag....and maybe an option to include looping midi songs in our signatures - think of the possibilities!  A page filled with posts, each one having a unique midi in the signature - the rich tapestry of competing sounds, with random words blinking on and off at will!  Brilliant!

People can already ignore anything they wish manually. Why condemn everyone with standards to walking to the river for water instead of creating the equivalent of indoor plumbing?

Look at all the people who want to be able to mark the entire site as "read" with one button press. How is that any different from ignore?

Moderation is clearly a bad idea as it dilutes content for everyone. How do the personal choices of any individual reader regarding what posts they choose to read for themselves, affect anyone else?

Quit lumping moderation and /ignore into the same category. They're as different as spirituality and religion.

I'm against an ignore function only if it increases the likelihood of the person using it to continually talk about who they're ignoring and when.

There's no reason to think that the level of that kind of talk would increase over the long term. In fact I think it is more likely that the lack of the ability increases that.

You generate your moods yourself, and then you generate your excuse for having them.
